Eddie Bauer had been developing and creating such effective down outerwear that military pilots would buy his product with their own money to keep them warm when flying. Bush pilots in Alaska would use them and could not get enough of their effectiveness.
During the Aleutian Islands campaign, many pilots would purchase Eddie Bauer's suits to keep them warm, and this caught the attention of the US military.
By late 1942, Bauer was tasked with developing official US Air Corps down flight suits. Two requirements had to be met, 1: the suit had to keep the flight crew warm for at least 3 hours at -70 degrees F, and 2: it had to keep the individual afloat for at least 24 hours.
With these requirements, the B-9 Parka and the A-8 Flight pants were created.
Available today is a pair of A-8. Overall condition is great with a period done patch work on one of the legs. It features two "through" pockets to access your trousers, a thigh pocket, two adjustment leg cuffs, two butt pockets, and two lower leg pockets.
